Trump

“The subordination of a nation to a man is nor a wholesome but a vicious state of things, needful, indeed for a vicious humanity. The instinct which makes it possible is any thing but a noble one. Call it ‘hero-worship’ and it looks respectable. . . . [I]t has ever been the parent of countless crimes. It is answerable for the torturing and murder of the noble-minded who would not submit–for the horrors of Bastilles and Siberias. . . .  From ancient warrior-worship to modern flunkeyism, the sentiment has ever been strongest where human nature has been vilest.”

— Herbert Spencer, “Representative Government”

Thank you Donald Trump. Thank you for your racism. Thank you for your misogyny. Thank you for your bluster, narcissism, and vulgarity. Thank you for saying what most Republicans believe, but don’t have the guts or honesty to say. Above all, thank you for revealing the mile-wide streak of authoritarianism in the United States.

The Republican Party has relied on racist votes since it formulated its “Southern Strategy” in the 1960s. But Republican politicians have been very careful to hide this racism through use of code words, which the corporate media–with its “objective” “Some say the sun rises in the East.  Others say it rises in the West. ” approach–has never called them on. But you, you Donald, have made Republican racism explicit. Thank you.

For decades, Republican politicians have scapegoated the least powerful (black people, Mexicans, gays, feminists, atheists) for social and economic problems created by the most powerful. But they’ve been very careful to use code words to (barely) hide this scapegoating. But you, you Donald, have made this scapegoating explicit. Thank you.

For decades, Republican politicians have pursued policies and enacted laws designed to restrict the reproductive rights of women and harm them economically. But they’ve been very careful to hide their misogyny with hypocritical rhetoric about “protecting women” and “family values.” But you, you Donald, have made Republican contempt for women explicit. Thank you.

For decades, Republican politicians have been careful to separate themselves from conspiracy theories, while appealing to those gullible enough to buy such theories. But you, you Donald, you old “birther,” have openly advocated one of the craziest such theories. Thank you.

Thank you also for showing how widespread such craziness is among Republicans. A new PPP poll reveals that 66% of Trump supporters believe that President Obama is a Muslim (versus 54% of Republicans overall), and only 12% of Trump supporters (versus 29% of Republicans overall) believe that Obama was born in the U.S.

These Trump supporters, these Republicans, are the same people who believe that Christians are being persecuted in the U.S., despite Christians comprising 70% of the population and over 90% of lawmakers. These are the same people who enthusiastically embrace the nuttiest conspiracy theories, in the entire absence of credible supporting evidence, while rejecting science, which is based on logic, evidence, and rigorous testing. These are the same people want the government to intrude into our private lives on “moral” grounds. These are the same “tough on [victimless] crime” people who enjoy seeing other people locked in cages.

Trump has brought American authoritarianism into the spotlight. Trump has shown that it’s time to address this festering malignancy.

Thank you Donald.
