WORKING POOR, n. A term so common as to pass by virtually unnoticed, and perhaps the ultimate comment on the gratifying fairness of the Free Enterprise System—a system in which those who do the dirtiest, most unpleasant, most necessary work are rewarded with poverty. To fully savor this delectable if familiar term, try to pronounce its near relative, “the working rich,” without smiling.
